BJ Penn vs. Frankie Edgar 2 Fight Prediction - UFC 118

FRANKIE EDGAR vs. BJ PENN

Fight Overview: Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn meet in an immediate rematch of their controversial title fight, which saw Edgar earn the unanimous decision by very lopsided scores in a fight many observers felt Penn did enough to win.

Edgar's Strengths: Edgar has very technical boxing with great footwork, handspeed, accuracy, and head movement. He also has great submission defense and very good takedowns.

Edgar's Weaknesses: He is not a very strong finisher, especially standing, and he can be frustrated if he isn't able to implement his gameplan.

Penn's Strengths: Penn has very technical, heavy-handed boxing, extremely good takedown defense, and world-class jiu-jitsu both offensively and defensively.

Penn's Weaknesses: His takedowns are not very good which limits his options in terms of asserting a gameplan and controlling the pace of the fight.

The Verdict: The first fight was close, but I felt like Penn clearly won three rounds and should have gotten a decision. I think that he learned his lesson about laying back in the pocket and fighting defensively against Edgar, though. This time, I expect him to try to push the action a lot more in the standup, to keep Edgar off balance, to look active for the judges, and to keep Edgar from being able to make good takedown attempts. I think Penn should retain his title with a decision win.

Fight Prediction:  BJ Penn by unanimous decision.
