DIEGO SANCHEZ vs. JOHN HATHAWAY

Fight Overview:  Diego Sanchez returns to the Welterweight division, where he will try to put the first blemish on Hathaway’s undefeated record.

Hathaway’s Strengths:  Hathaway has great striking and very powerful ground and pound.

Hathaway’s Weaknesses:  He has never fought anyone near Sanchez’s level, and his ground game is probably not ready for that step up.

Sanchez’s Strength:  Sanchez has very good wrestling and ground and pound, underrated submissions, excellent cardio, and a very aggressive style.

Sanchez’s Weaknesses:  His standup can be effective, but it is awkward and not very technical, and he does not work well off his back.

The Verdict:  Sanchez is just too much for Hathaway at this stage in his career.  Hathaway probably has the superior standup, but I don’t think he’s ready to handle Sanchez’s pace or his overpowering takedowns and ground game.  Sanchez by decision.

Fight Prediction:  Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez by unanimous decision.
