Strikeforce – Jacare Souza vs. Robbie Lawler Prediction

RONALDO SOUZA vs. ROBBIE LAWLER

Fight Overview:  Souza looks to defend his Middleweight title against huge puncher Robbie Lawler.  Souza has a very well-rounded skill set, but every punch Lawler throws has the potential to end fights, so this should be a good one.

Lawler’s Strengths:  Lawler has ridiculous knockout power and pretty good technical boxing.  Every shot he throws could be the last one he needs to throw.

Lawler’s Weaknesses:  His ground game in general might as well not exist.

Souza’s Strengths:  Souza has very effective striking and some of the best jiu-jitsu in the world.

Souza’s Weaknesses:  His chin can be exploited and he has never faced power like Lawler’s before.  He is also not a dominant offensive wrestler.

The Verdict:  I think Souza is just too well-rounded for Lawler.  It is entirely possible that Souza is the superior striker, from a technique standpoint.  Clearly though he doesn’t want to stand with Lawler, whose power punches make mack trucks look like kittens.  I think his striking should be good enough to make Lawler hold back a little, though, and it should allow Jacare to set up the takedown.  From there it is elementary.  Jacare by submission.
