ANTONIO BANUELOS vs. MIGUEL TORRES
Fight Overview: Two skilled and well-rounded WEC veterans go at it as Torres looks to return to championship form against the tough and powerful Banuelos. Both guys have good, albeit different, standup, and effective but wildly differing ground games, so this is an interesting style matchup.
Banuelos’ Strengths: Banuelos has good boxing, very effective wrestling, and great dirty boxing from the clinch.
Banuelos’ Weaknesses: His jiu-jitsu is nowhere near the level of Torres’.
Torres’ Strengths: Torres has very effective and technically sound boxing to go along with great jiu-jitsu, especially from his back, where he is one of the most effective in the sport.
Torres’ Weaknesses: He will be at a serious wrestling and physical strength disadvantage and he is in danger of being controlled in the clinch.
The Verdict: This is going to be a very close and competitive fight, but in the end I think Torres has enough offensive tools to get the job done. He is going to have to fight smart and keep Banuelos at a distance, because in the clinch is the one place he could lose this fight. If he can keep Banuelos on the defensive in the striking game, though, and force him to look for takedowns, he should be able to soften Banuelos up on the feet and make him pay for taking the fight to the ground.
